Well, trip, was to be the first leg of my summer holidays of 2009, which only proved to be the only causes of misfortune varies, so it has turned into a beautiful 3-day tour of Austria on the ground.
But from the beginning, those who know her know what I'm talking about, but what is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?
The Großglockner with its 3978 m is the highest mountain in Austria and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is the scenic route that passes by, and that makes a trip to the glacier, the Pasterze.
Some call it the best motorcycle road in Europe. Bella is for sure, prepared and immersed in an enchanting landscape that almost forces you to admire it rather than think of the corners, I found myself going for a walk as it rarely happens to me on the mountain roads. Do not forget: it is a private road for a fee - also quite expensive - but it is one of those places where you have to go, absolutely.
To get closer to their destination, after having taken the Brenner highway heading north, I came to Bressanone and I went to Val Pusteria. I chose to enter Austria Pass Staller (instead of the busiest Dobbiaco), a small step so narrow that the road is one-way, alternating with quarters of an hour, with traffic lights that adjust up / down and left everyone time to clear the road before opening to traffic the opposite (for me a genius to be applied in many ways, so you will not find a Hummer suddenly behind a curve). Top of the hill in Austria starting to go downhill, and I stopped in Lienz, a lovely town also well equipped with mechanical parts (I say this from experience).
Day dedicated to Gross. It's not that I was really clear the road to get there ... so eventually I took the road 107 and I crossed my fingers. It was the right one! You climb through meadows and mountains, landscapes by Heidi and kids. At first a little 'dull. But that will never have a special 'is the street? boh! Then you get to the exit, you pay (ask for the return on the 108, which is the discount) and the show begins, the road rises and the mountains are opened, the fun begins! Panorama everything to taste, and the beauty is that it only lasts for a few corners: you are speaking of a road covering a length of 50 km!
Now if you have not studied the map and points of view there is a problem: there is a roundabout which way you go ...? Go with the flow (actually there were very few people) has reached the point of observation Kaiser Franz Josef. Here you are in front of the Grossglockner and almost over his ghiacchiaio the Pasterze, which among other things is the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps. For me it's time to grab a coffee and enjoy the view ... (nda what is behind the glacier ... but I put a picture of her would take away the taste and curiosity to go see him live)
E ' forward to continuing the road is still long. Go back and take the first round the other way. Curves always, always beautiful landscapes, mountains always. This time we arrive at Edelweiss, panoramic terrace with a 360 degrees on more than 30 three thousand (nda 30 peaks over 3000m). Definitely a unique show of its kind. Here, too, relaxation and panoramic coffee ...
Descend. After many more curves, I go back to a state of plain, straight gray and sad. The goal is to return to Lienz via the 108, the mountain road expressways passing through the other side of Grossglockner. While I'm here, I take this opportunity to see how, I just know that there is a tunnel and back toward home.
The first comment when the mouth is "ommamma, but this is better than an amusement park !!!". Yes, imagine a mountain road two-lane highway model but very blur. I'm not not even tell you how much there is to enjoy it after watching the other views.
The rest is boredom. Arrival in Lienz, and I move to my second stage, the Nockalmstraße , scenic road that never will go to due to bad weather. In fact I will return to your home. But near the entrance of Nockalmstraße, but there is a road that seems to rise to anything but to go down with emotions to roller coaster on a curved road with 23% slope. Take care, look for it but Face them informed. With the slope of the brakes do not work as we would expect ...
Another and last advice before you go: remember assess the weather. This is one of those places where it can snow even in August, so check beforehand.
The official website of the "playground", is as follows: http://www.grossglockner.at/it/ , and you can also find links to other mountain roads. If you go to maybe make a whistle, I will gladly go back!
