Rereading the plot of "The Cube" (1997) I find that the Canadian director Vincenzo Natali was inspired by an episode of "Twilight Zone", namely "Five characters in search of a exit" (1961), which you can read here . In turn, I learn that the precursor is based on nothing more than to "Six Characters in Search of an Author by Pirandello. I do not want to add anything, nor draw conclusions. I only say that it is fascinating how they develop ideas.
